The Real Me Series - The Conversation

Who are you when no one is watching?

If a camera were placed on you without your knowledge, and that footage was later shown to others, would you like what you see?

The spotlight is on me now, so let me continue with my series… :-)

I remember sitting in the front seat of his car. I had gotten to know him a few months prior, and from the very beginning, our relationship was quite rough. We simply could not agree on anything. At some point, I even wondered if it was sabotage. Why did he behave the way he did?

Looking back now, it’s not surprising anymore.

Sometimes, the good things in our lives don’t come wrapped in neat gift bags. They may arrive disguised as challenges, only to later reveal themselves as blessings. Our relationship was a perfect example of that. Over time, we had grown fond of each other.

On this particular evening, as I sat in the passenger seat, he made a statement that shook my entire being. It was the first time I had ever heard someone say something like that; so boldly, so passionately, and without shame. I was completely taken aback.

His words took me back to the first day of our annual conference. We were reminded of how the basics of our faith truly make a difference. In fact, the first speaker emphasised this so strongly, even singing it out. It struck something in me that day.

I went home and cried my eyes out...

The message was about the basics, and somehow, I had drifted away from them. I couldn’t even explain how or when it happened, but one thing was certain: I couldn’t keep doing life without returning to those foundations.

The foundation of anything is everything.

High-rise buildings have deep foundations because of the weight they carry, while lighter structures can stand on shallower ones. In the same way, if the basics are not deeply rooted, it’s only a matter of time before everything comes crumbling down.

So let me ask you:

What is that one habit you know once sustained you, but you’ve now pushed aside because you felt you had “arrived”?

Take a moment to identify it. Ask yourself, do you need to return to it, or perhaps even improve on it?

I know what mine is, and I’ll be sharing it in my next post.

Until then, reflect on this, share it with someone, and I’ll see you in the next one.

TO BE CONTINUED….
